Earth Day Activities with Pinoleville Native American Head Start & Early Head Start

For Earth Day this year, we wanted to focus on solid waste for our activity. To expose the students, ranging in age from birth to four, to the concept of composting we purchased some compostable packing peanuts. These starch-based peanuts are organic and non-toxic. With a little bit of water, the peanuts break down to a soapy substance that can actually be added to your compost pile to make a hummus tea.

The students loved the activity. We discussed what the dissolving peanuts looked and felt like it. We also taught the kids about how the soapy-looking water could be used to help feed plants. The students liked the event so much that they ask if we have more ‘special peanuts’ to play with.
